    CONCEALED HANDGUN LICENSING AND RENEWAL

This is the State of Texas required class in order to submit your application for a Concealed Handgun Permit.
Students with little to no previous handgun experience are encouraged to complete the Basics of Pistol Shooting Class, prior to attending this class.

This class covers the required legal information and shooting proficiency requirements of the State of Texas.  Students must have a strong familiarity with handgun operation and experience prior to attending this class.  In order to complete this class successfully, a student must pass a written and shooting proficiency test (175/250 pts) 70% accuracy with a firearm of greater than .32 caliber. The shooting proficiency test will consist of 50 rounds of timed fire on the state specified target. 20 rounds at 3 yards 20 rounds at 7 yards and 10 rounds at 15 yards.

What you will need to bring to class:

  • 2 passport photos (available at CVS or Walgreens)

  • Notepad and pen

  • 1 firearm with 50 rounds of ammunition (non-steel core)

  • Receipt for payment of your fee to the state

 

We will provide you with your Student Packet.  This packet will include:

  • Texas CHL Law Book

  • Photo card to place your passport photo on

  • Notary pages (FREE Notary included)

  • Fingerprint cards (FREE Fingerprinting included)

 

Appropriate Dress:

  • Close toed shoes

  • Ball cap

  • Eye protection

  • Ear protection


Requirements to apply:

  • A resident of U.S.A., Legal Resident Alien, Permanent Resident Alien - Proper ID Required.

  • 21 and legally able to buy a handgun under both Federal and State law.
  • 18 year olds active in Military Service
  • Not judged to be chemically dependent or of unsound mind.
  • Not ever convicted of a felony anywhere, and no convictions of a Class A or B misdemeanor or Disorderly Conduct  in the past 5 years.
  • Not subject to a restraining or protective order.
  • Not delinquent in payment of taxes, child support or any money collected by any Government entity.
  • Out of state residents may apply for a non-resident license if they meet all other requirements listed above.


You must qualify using a .32 caliber or larger. If you qualify with a Semi-Auto, you may carry any type or caliber handgun. If you qualify with a revolver, you may not carry a semi-auto legally .

  NRA BASICS OF PISTOL SHOOTING - $120

The NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course teaches the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude for owning and operating a pistol safely. This course is at least 10-hours long and includes classroom and range time learning to shoot revolvers and semi-automatic pistols. Students learn NRA’s rules for safe gun handling; pistol parts and operation; ammunition; shooting fundamentals; range rules; shooting from the bench rest position, two handed and one handed standing positions; cleaning the pistol; and continued opportunities for skill development. Students will receive the Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, take a Basics of Pistol Shooting Student Examination, and course completion certificate.

    HOME FIREARM SAFETY - $75  

NRA’s Home Firearm Safety Course is a non-shooting course and teaches students the basic knowledge, skills, and to explain the attitude necessary for the safe handling and storage of firearms and ammunition in the home. This is a four-hour course for safe gun handling that is conducted in the classroom only. Students are taught NRA’s three rules for safe gun handling; primary causes of firearms accidents; firearm parts; how to unload certain action types; ammunition components; cleaning; care; safe storage of firearms in the home; and the benefits of becoming an active participant in the shooting sports. Students will receive the NRA Home Firearm Safety handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, Basic Firearm Training Program brochure, and course completion certificate.

    ADVANCE TACTICAL PISTOL SHOOTING - $150  

Students should have solid intermediate to advanced gun-handling skills prior to attending this course. Proof of shooting experience can be one of the following: NRA Basic Pistol Course Certificate, NRA FIRST Steps Course Certificate, NRA pistol competitive shooting qualification card, military DD 214 with pistol qualification, or passing the Pre-Course Assessment.

This course focuses on development of aggressive gun-handling skills, dim and low light shooting scenarios, complex shooting positions, inhibited reloading and strategic pistol deployment. The concepts of firearm comfort, threat assessment, and monitoring all visual areas will be emphasized throughout the class.

Students will develop reflexive gun-handling skills that will enable them to quickly and efficiently engage threats while performing multiple complex tasks.

We believe it is critical that pistol skills stay sharp. This course provides the advanced training needed to keep the armed private citizen ready to handle the most complex threats under multiple conditions.

This is an 5-hour course. Students should expect to shoot approximately 100 rounds of ammunition.

    TEXAS HUNTER EDUCATION PROGRAM - $50  

Who is required to take Texas Hunter Education?

Every hunter (including out-of-state hunters) born on or after Sept. 2, 1971, must successfully complete a Hunter Education Training Course. Minimum age of certification is 9 years of age.
 

If you were born on or after September 2, 1971 and you are:

  • under 9 years of age, you must be accompanied*.
  • age 9 through 16, you must successfully complete a hunter education course, or you must be accompanied*.
  • age 17 and over, you must successfully complete a hunter education course; or purchase a “Hunter Education Deferral” and you must be accompanied*.

Please note that some federally controlled areas require all hunters using that site to have hunter education certification. In Texas, this includes Corps of Engineers property and most military reservations. Be sure to check with the specific area prior to going hunting.

Course cost includes TXPWD Fee ($15), Facilities Charge  ($15) and Range Fee ($20).
